{"id":11202,"date":"2026-03-20T08:46:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T08:46:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/?p=11202"},"modified":"2026-05-11T13:03:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:03:19","slug":"international-day-of-forests-why-mediterranean-forests-are-key-to-ecosystem-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/en\/2026\/03\/international-day-of-forests-why-mediterranean-forests-are-key-to-ecosystem-resilience\/","title":{"rendered":"International Day of Forests: Why Mediterranean forests are key to ecosystem resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">By Martin Fillot, AIFM\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Celebrating the International Day of Forests<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year on March 21, the world celebrates the <\/span><b>International Day of Forests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a day established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 to raise awareness about the importance of all types of forests.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">This date represents the seasonal cycles of forests across both hemispheres and highlights the essential role forests play throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forests provide multiple benefits that are often described through <\/span><b>three major functions: ecological, social and economic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the economic value of forests \u2014 through timber, non-wood forest products and tourism \u2014 is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/international-day-of-forests\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly highlighted this year by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, their ecological and social roles are equally vital. They are part of a broader ecological continuum linking mountains, wetlands, rivers, coasts and marine ecosystems. Healthy forests support downstream ecosystems by regulating water flows, filtering sediments and maintaining habitats that ultimately benefit coastal and marine biodiversity.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Protecting forests therefore means protecting the entire Mediterranean ecological system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Forest pilot sites in the RESCOM project<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the <\/span><b>RESCOM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative, the consortium implements Nature-based Solutions across several pilot sites around the Mediterranean.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Two sites illustrate the importance of forests in this approach:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Oued Ezzen National Park, Tunisia<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Oued Ezzen National Park<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hosts remarkable forest ecosystems typical of the Kroumirie region, including cork oak and zeen oak forests. These habitats support a wide range of species such as the <\/span><b>Barbary deer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, amphibians and diverse birdlife.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Within RESCOM, actions focus on:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">restoring degraded forest areas and watersheds, to improve ecosystem resilience and reduce erosion,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">strengthening fire prevention measures, including the creation of firebreaks and improved surveillance infrastructure,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">managing visitor flows and developing ecotourism, through signage, trail management and dedicated visitor areas,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">restoring and managing water sources and wetlands, to support biodiversity and ensure sustainable water use for ecosystems and communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">These actions aim to strengthen both ecological resilience and sustainable local development.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11214\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11214\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Oued-Ezzen-National-Park-Tunisia-\u00a9AIFM-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Oued-Ezzen-National-Park-Tunisia-\u00a9AIFM-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Oued-Ezzen-National-Park-Tunisia-\u00a9AIFM-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Oued-Ezzen-National-Park-Tunisia-\u00a9AIFM-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Oued-Ezzen-National-Park-Tunisia-\u00a9AIFM.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11214\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oued Ezzen National Park (Tunisia) \u00a9AIFM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Bouhachem Natural Park, Morocco<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Bouhachem Natural Park<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the most biodiverse forest areas in northern Morocco, hosting unique Mediterranean mountain forests and many endemic species. Within the RESCOM project, restoration efforts in the Bouhachem National Park focus on a cork oak forest area severely affected by wildfires.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">RESCOM actions may potentially include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">restoring priority cork oak habitats through assisted natural regeneration, targeted planting and adapted grazing management measures implementation,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">protecting critical habitats for the Barbary macaque, whose local population is estimated at around 250 individuals,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">engaging local communities in restoration activities, ensuring their participation in planning, planting and long-term stewardship of the forest,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">testing and applying ecological restoration standards developed by the Society for Ecological Restoration Europe (SERE), already implemented in southern Spain.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">This site demonstrates how forest conservation can go hand in hand with rural development and biodiversity protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11211\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11211\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-11211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Bouhachem-National-Park-Morocco-\u00a9AIFM-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Bouhachem-National-Park-Morocco-\u00a9AIFM-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Bouhachem-National-Park-Morocco-\u00a9AIFM-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Bouhachem-National-Park-Morocco-\u00a9AIFM-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.medconsortium.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Bouhachem-National-Park-Morocco-\u00a9AIFM.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11211\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bouhachem National Park (Morocco) \u00a9AIFM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>Governance challenges in Mediterranean forests<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;\">Forests in Mediterranean countries often face multiple pressures: climate change, fires, grazing, tourism, and competing land uses. Effective conservation therefore depends not only on ecological restoration, but also on governance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In countries such as <\/span><b>Tunisia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Morocco<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, forests are largely public lands managed by national forest administrations.
