The project focuses on the Princes’ Islands, an archipelago of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara, southeast of Istanbul.
The surrounding marine environment is ecologically significant, hosting seagrass meadows, fish, molluscs, and endangered deep-water corals. These ecosystems provide essential services, including habitat for marine life, support for fisheries and tourism, coastal protection, carbon sequestration, and oxygen production.
By whom?
The project is implemented by the Marine Life Conservation Society (DYKD – Deniz Yaşamını Koruma Derneği), which aims to conserve, protect, and restore marine biodiversity in Türkiye, foster public awareness about marine ecosystems, and engage citizens in conservation efforts.
Which challenges?
This delicate ecosystem faces significant threats from overfishing, industrial pollution, heavy maritime traffic, and ghost fishing gear. Degradation of marine habitats and reduced ecosystem resilience are also harming the corals around the Princes’ Islands.
About the project
- Ghost net mapping and removal
- Coral transplanting and survival monitoring
- Local community engagement: education and public awareness campaigns, upcycling of ghost nests, giving a new value chain to local products
- Coral reef restoration: replanted corals survive and attract other species (nurseries, shelter), removal of nets helps restore ecosystem functionning and services
- Local communities engaged: awareness-raising, ghost net upcycling
- Biodiversity loss
- Food security
- Economic and Social development
