The project is implemented in the central Middle Atlas, spanning two of the country’s major protected areas: Ifrane National Park (PNI) and Khénifra National Park. Both parks are part of the Cedar Biosphere Reserve (RBC) and the Atlas corridor.
The area hosts remarkable biodiversity in terms of both fauna and flora.
By whom?
The project is managed by the Association Forêt Modèle Ifrane (AFMI), which, since its creation, has accumulated significant experience in development and conservation projects.
Its objective is to contribute to the establishment of mechanisms and approaches for the sustainable management of natural resources and landscapes, and to preserve and enhance biodiversity and natural ecosystems. It also aims to help improve the living standards of the local population, promote cultural heritage and local products, and educate and raise awareness about the environment and sustainable development.
Which challenges?
The project area, located in Ifrane National Park (PNI), faces significant societal challenges, including rural poverty, the economic dependence of local populations on natural resources (such as wood and grazing), and the marginalization of women in decision-making and resource management processes.
The overexploitation of natural resources, driven by demographic pressure and the abandonment of traditional practices (such as the Agdal system), has led to ecosystem degradation, directly affecting the livelihoods of local communities.
About the project
- Community engagement for capacity-building and awareness-raising through workshops and meetings: to engage the different local actors in restoring the traditional Agdal practices to manage resources, valuation of local products and support to cooperatives
- Reforestation of local and endemic species, in collaboration with the locals
- Locals are engaged in restoring the Agdal practice
- The degraded ecosystems of the Parc National d’Ifrane are restored with the planted trees
- Disaster risk reduction
- Climate change mitigation
- Biodiversity loss
- Economic and Social development
